US crypto derivatives expand as Bitcoin consolidates below supply clusters

Coinbase secured DCO approval and Robinhood launched perpetual contracts as Bitcoin hovered near $83,685 amid cooling ETF flows, while Bitwise listed a staked NEAR ETP and Balancer approved a wind-down.

Coinbase secured Commodity Futures Trading Commission approval for its derivatives clearing organization, finalizing an integrated domestic infrastructure to list, broker, and clear fully collateralized contracts in-house while accepting USDC as settlement collateral. Concurrently, Robinhood began rolling out an eight-contract crypto perpetual futures lineup in the United States through Robinhood Derivatives and Bitstamp, offering no-expiry trading with leverage of up to 10x and broader domestic access planned over coming months.

The simultaneous expansions mark a structural shift toward regulated, integrated derivatives plumbing and retail brokerage distribution in the US market. Because Coinbase's in-house clearing license currently applies to fully collateralized contracts—leaving margined futures with partner firms—and Robinhood's contract rollout remains phased, the near-term magnitude of liquidity migration and risk-transfer depth across domestic crypto derivatives venues remains uncertain.

Bitcoin traded at $83,685, up 0.2% over 24 hours, consolidating below the $84,000–$85,000 resistance band where long-term holder cost basis clusters and rising US bond yields limited upward momentum. Daily inflows into US spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds slowed to $31 million on Sept. 28, with net allocations across all US crypto spot funds falling to $64.8 million on Monday despite extending an eight-day inflow streak. While regulated wrappers continue to absorb circulating supply, basis trading within ETF allocations leaves the degree of outright directional institutional demand ambiguous.

Bitwise listed its spot NEAR exchange-traded product (NRR) on NYSE Arca, incorporating in-house protocol staking with rewards distributed through the fund's net asset value alongside a 0.75% sponsor fee. NEAR traded at $4.90, up 1.7% over 24 hours, following a monthly surge of more than 160% driven by ecosystem intent volume. The product broadens institutional token access beyond major assets into proof-of-stake layer-one infrastructure, though sustained demand for the wrapper remains unproven as initial trading commences.

Balancer governance voted to approve an orderly wind-down while rejecting a protocol fork, setting Oct. 30 for pausable liquidity pools to transition to withdrawals-only mode across its remaining $52.4 million in total value locked. Capital withdrawals will remain functional indefinitely, with BAL token holders scheduled to begin redeeming remaining treasury assets at the end of May 2027. The structured sunset eliminates operating risk for active liquidity providers while creating a multi-year recovery timeline for token holders contingent on pool solvency and execution.
